What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced "Ray-key") is a simple Japanese energy-balancing method that is used by thousands of people all over the world. It is well known as a hands-on treatment technique, but most Reiki practitioners use Reiki for their own benefit too by working with energy and treating themselves!

Reiki is a technique that uses meditation, mindfulness and energy balancing to help promote a person's natural healing abilities and overall sense of well being. The energy we work with is universal energy or chi energy, in a similar way to those who practise Tai Chi, Yoga, Acupuncture or Reflexology, except that we use energy to balance energy, rather than movement or pressure points. It's non invasive and one of the safest ways to balance the energy system, so babies, children, pregnant women and those on medication can all enjoy the benefits from this form of complementary treatment. The most common immediate effect being deep relaxation and peace.

Why not give it a try?

Experiencing Reiki first hand is the best way to understand what it is like and what it can potentially do for you.

Where is it from?

Reiki was developed by a man called Mikao Usui in the early 1900s in Japan. He created a simple self-healing, spiritual development and treatment system that anyone could use. Eventually Reiki passed to the west and it is now practised all over the world.

What can Reiki do for me?

Anyone can benefit from Reiki, whether you have learned Reiki for yourself or received a course of Reiki treatments from a practitioner.

Reiki can help with the following:

Deep relaxation
Reduced stress and anxiety
Boosted energy levels
A feeling of inner calm, contentment and serenity
A speeding up of the natural healing process

Reiki can also help you to:

Feel more positive, confident and better able to cope
Deal better with stressful people and difficult situations
Develop a strong sense of purpose and clear-thinking
Remove some of the 'clutter' from your life.

Reiki treatments

Receiving Reiki from a practitioner is a simple process. The practitioner will gently lay their hands on or just above the body (in the aura) in a series of hand positions from the head to the feet. During the treatment, energy (called "chi") is drawn through the practitioner into the recipient, helping to produce a state of balance. You might experience deep relaxation, tingling, heat from the practitioner's hands, or feel like you are floating. You might feel nothing: every one is different. The recipient remains clothed throughout the session.

Learning Reiki

Reiki is simple to learn and anyone can learn it. You do not need any prior experience and you do not even have to believe in Reiki, it will still work for you.

On the "First Degree" course you will be "attuned to the energy" and you will be shown how to use Reiki for your own benefit and the benefit of others. You will also learn a simple set of "rules to live by" set down by Reiki's founder. Reiki is not a religion and is practised by people from all walks of life.

By the end of your course you will know what to do and you will be able to work on yourself, friends and family.

You can then progress to "Second Degree" if you like but this is not essential and entirely up to you.
